MIDDLE SCHOOL GRADUATE STUDENT OPPORTUNITIES

Middle School Summer Program Dates:
Sunday, June 14 – Saturday, July 18, 2009


Special Events Lead (1) – coordinate logistics for the staff training, parent/student orientation, 3-week workshop celebration, 9th grade graduation and trip to Great America. Other duties/responsibilities as assigned. Employment Dates: May 25 – July 24, 2009. Summer Appointment: 100% (40 hours/week)

Liaison (5) – supervise up to 5 workshop classes; 1 high school transition group; communicate with parents, students, instructors, and TA’s. Facilitate field trip coordination, and assist with Special Event planning. Other duties/responsibilities as assigned. Employment Dates: May 25 – July 24, 2009. Summer Appointment: 100% (40 hours/week)

Special Events Lead (1) – The Special Events Coordinator is responsible for coordinating the logistics for all high school summer program special events in conjunction with the Program Coordinators and other staff. Responsibilities include: coordinating all event logistics, staff recruitment, assignments and announcements, student speaker recruitment, securing equipment and supplies, mini trips, workshops, all weekend activities and events, volunteering and outreach. Other duties/responsibilities as assigned. Employment Dates: May 25 – July 31, 2009. Summer Appointment: 100% (40 hours/week)

Fine Arts Lead (1) – The Fine Arts Coordinator is responsible for coordinating the Fine Arts evening classes for rising 10th and 11th graders during the summer program in conjunction with the Program Coordinators and other staff. Responsibilities include: coordinating all fine arts class logistics, staff assignments and announcements, securing equipment and supplies, mini trips, and coordinating and overseeing the logistics for the 3-week celebration. Other duties/responsibilities as assigned. Employment Dates: February 16 – July 15, 2009. Spring Appointment: 25% (10 hours/week) Summer Appointment: 100% (40 hours/week)

Internship Liaisons (4) – The PEOPLE Program is seeking graduate students to serve as the lead of clusters of rising high school seniors who will be participating in internships in the following disciplines:
Science, Medicine and Engineering
Theater and Arts
Business and Law
Letters & Science and Education

Internship Liaisons will assist in the planning and implementation of the PEOPLE Summer Residential Program. Intern Leads are assigned a cluster of rising senior high students who will participate in an academic class and a practical internship placement in a potential college major or career option of the student’s choice. Internship Leads are responsible for: monitoring student participation, internship site job coaching, mentoring, coordination of meetings, problem solving, intervention, negotiations, arrangements, and the driving of students to and/or from internship sites as necessary. Other duties/responsibilities as assigned. Employment Dates: February 16 – August 5, 2009. Spring Appointment: 25% (10 hours/week) Summer Appointment: 100% (40 hours/week)

Peace Room (4) – Peace room employees will provide support and be responsible for facilitating educational workshops and discussions, provide conflict-resolution services, assist in building interpersonal relationships with students and staff. Other duties/responsibilities as assigned. Counseling Psychology and other counseling related majors strongly encouraged to apply. Peace room staff will consist of two 3-week and two 6-week employees. Employment dates: May 25 – July 31, 2009. Summer Appointment: 50% (20 hours/week)

ACT/Study Skills Instructors – ACT Instructors will be working with rising 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students to get a jump-start on the ACT through a 3-week course delving into the content and structure of the exam. The goal is to provide strategies for preparing and taking the test, improve self-confidence and understanding of English, math, reading, science, and writing portions of the exam. Academic Leads, teachers, and education majors strongly encouraged to apply. Attendance at preparation meetings, training sessions, and orientations are required prior to the start of the program, as well as assist with program wrap-up. Summer Flat Rate Compensation: 3-Week $2000.00 and 6-Week $2400.00

Office Assistants (3) – Office Assistants are responsible for serving as a contact for staff with any office and data needs and requirements, monitoring and updating student attendance, van use, equipment sign-out, student and parent check-in and check-out, field parent and staff inquiries, assist with activity and mini trip information, and working in conjunction with other staff and Program Coordinators. Other duties/responsibilities as assigned. Attention to detail, organized, dependable and excellent public relations skills a plus. Employment Dates: May 25 – July 31, 2009. Summer Appointment: 100% (40 hours/week)

Qualifications

  1. Candidates must have experience working with middle or high school students from diverse backgrounds and the ability to create positive linkages between students and staff. Ideal candidates will have a history of positive youth and community relations, excellent written and verbal communication skills, very detailed and organized, creative, and passionate about improving the life chances of minority youth.
  2. Positions require acceptance into a graduate degree program, unless otherwise noted.
  3. Employment will require a criminal background check. An offer of employment is conditional pending the results of a criminal background check. If the results are unacceptable, the offer will be withdrawn or, if you have started employment, your employment will be terminated.
  4. Some positions require a valid driver’s license and must be authorized by the University to drive state vehicles.
  5. Must be available for the entire program including staff training, parent/student orientations, and special events.
  6. Candidates must inform the program of all other appointment and/or positions you currently hold on campus.

NOTE: Tuition remission eligibility for summer appointments will vary depending upon current employment with the University in the spring semester of 2009. Compensation amounts are listed as the taxable gross amount, actual amount varies by individual.
