School Liaisons
The University of WisconsinÐMadison and the Madison
Metropolitan School District (MMSD) have established a partnership wherein
liaisons from the PEOPLE Program
and liaisons from every middle and high school within MMSD maintain ongoing
communication and an open exchange of information, in order to assist PEOPLE
students and parents with accessing resources, navigating the school system,
homeÐschool community networking, and to address any concerns, questions,
issues, and/or interventions that might be necessary in order to assist in the
success of our students.
The University of WisconsinÐMadison has also established a partnership with
Edgewood, Shabazz and Verona High Schools. School Liaisons hold various
positions within your schools. At the High School level, Guidance Counselors
and Minority Service Counselors serve as our school liaisons. At the Middle
School Level, the majority of our school liaisons are guidance counselors. Please
make sure that you meet and establish a good working relationship with both
your PEOPLE and School Liaisons.

Onsite Coordinators
Each of the tutorial sites will have a site coordinator who is responsible for the dayÐtoÐday operations and supervision of the tutorial site. The coordinator is responsible for direct communication between the school administrators, tutorial staff, and the PEOPLE Liaison. In addition, the coordinator will be available for communication with the family and school when needed.
Currently, we have five (5) tutorial sites to serve our students. The four MMSD High Schools has a PEOPLE tutoring site to serve our 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students. The UW Campus site will continue to serve the 7th and 8th grade students. Students who are attending Edgewood, Shabazz, and Verona High Schools will also report to the campus site as those schools will not have a tutoring site.

Academic
Leads
Academic Leads are responsible for
the academic advancement of PEOPLE students and assisting with supervision of
tutorial staff. Academic leads
assess and/or oversee the assessment of the academic needs of PEOPLE students,
develop plans of action, ensure that adequate resources are available, and
monitor weekly progress. All leads are responsible to schedule weekly meetings
with designated tutoring staff. In addition Academic leads will also be
responsible to meet with various MMSD teachers in their respective subject
area.
Tutors
Responsible for providing tutorial
services and homework help to PEOPLE Students, including: teaching concept and
formats, learning strategies, computer searches, research assistance, listening
to presentation, engaging in dialogue exchanges (foreign language), test preparation,
reviewing, special projects, and other academic activities.
Onsite Tutoring Logistics
All students must come prepared for tutoring with the
necessary instructional materials,
a strong academic work ethic, and respect for the maintenance of a quiet study
environment. Please make sure that your child brings their daily planner,
homework, special projects, books, syllabus, test review materials, and any
other necessary instructional material to site.
Tutoring services are only open to PEOPLE students who are
actively working on homework, special projects, tutoring activity, reading, and
preparing for tests. Visitors
or inactive PEOPLE students will not be allowed on the premises.
In addition, students who have completed their work will be
allowed to leave site unless waiting to be picked up by parents. While waiting,
students must continue to engage in some form of educational work until they
leave the site. Parents will be notified if students refuse to engage in
academic work, are disruptive, or continually arrive without schoolwork and/or
appropriate materials and the student will be asked to leave the premises. This
restriction is necessary to insure that other students are not distracted while
working. If there is a concern regarding your child leaving campus early,
please
let us know.
Arriving to Tutorial Sites Ð Campus Site only
Students will be provided with bus tickets for transportation to and from campus site.
PEOPLE Program parents are encouraged to network with each other to develop carpool arrangements. To assist parents in this and other networking efforts, the PEOPLE Program will be distributing an updated telephone directory of parents who provided authorization to release their contact information.

home is determined by each family.
Students are required to report immediately to Einstein
Cafeteria for attendance checkÐin and tutor assignment. A light snack will be
provided. However, if students desire additional snacks beyond what is provided
by the PEOPLE Program, they should bring those items to campus with them.
Program Participation Requirements:
(grade point average) are not
required to attend tutoring sessions. However, tutoring services will still be
available for you if you still
choose to attend.
Each student is required to attend one cohort meeting each semester. Please refer to the calendar in the front section of this handbook and note the dates of the cohort meeting. Your child will be notified as to which cohort meeting they will be asked to attend.
The PEOPLE Program automatically receives grade reports from the MMSD District office. If you are a student that is in an outÐofÐdistrict school, you are required to submit the most upÐtoÐdate progress and grade report to your Liaison each quarter. Students may also be required to have their teachers sign interim status reports.
The PEOPLE Program will notify you of exciting educational and cultural events that will increase your knowledge base, broaden your awareness, and enrich your life experiences.
Please make sure that you take advantage of all of the resources and services available at your local school.
Work very closely with the teachers and Guidance Counselors in your school in addition to taking advantage of extra credit opportunities whenever possible.
The primary goals of these basic program participation
requirements are to:
Since the onset of the Madison PEOPLE Program in 2000, the program staff has been committed to providing students with academic support in order for students to be successful throughout their middle and high school years.
Our program goals will continue to be as follows:
1.
To provide services that will make the transition between
middle
and high school easier.
2. To have our students graduate from high school with options.
3.
To have our students graduate from UWÐMadison or another
institution
of higher learning as academically strong, wellÐrounded people.
Specifically, our staff works daily with MMSD school teachers, guidance counselors, and principals to ensure that we are getting accurate and upÐtoÐdate information on the progress of our students. With this information, we then are able to supplement their education with quality tutoring services. Our Liaisons work hard at gathering information both from schools, students, and families in order to best meet their needs.
Conversely, PEOPLE students are expected to commit themselves to a high degree of academic and personal excellence during the school year and summer program in order to remain in the program. Satisfactory academic progress must be made towards middle and high school graduation and preparation for college. Parents play a key role in ensuring their child is meeting this expectation by maintaining ongoing communication with their childÕs school and the PEOPLE Program.
The success of the PEOPLE program is determined by the strength of the partnership; (MMSD schools, PEOPLE Program, and students/parents). The majority of our participants have been taking full advantage of the PEOPLE tutorial services, participating in program events, and have been successfully advancing in their subject areas. However, we do have some students that arenÕt meeting the 2.75 G.P.A minimum requirements for program compliance and/or not taking advantage of the resources our program offers. Please be advised that we are now at a point where we will be reinforcing and responding to this requirement. This will result in students being placed on academic probation if the requirements around academics are not being met.
Specific information
regarding academic probation is as follows:
1.
Probation:
By being placed on probation, we have noticed that your childÕs grades during
the last grading period are not at the 2.75 mark for program compliance. As a
result, we will review your childÕs progress during the next two quarters and
will expect full participation at tutoring, and an increase in communication
with the PEOPLE Program staff and school teachers. If at the end of the
semester your child hasnÕt raised their GPA to a 2.75 and/or hasnÕt taken any
steps for improvement, your child will then be placed on strict
probation.
2. Strict Probation: By being placed on strict probation, we have noticed that your childÕs grades during the last grading period are significantly below the 2.75 mark for program compliance. As a result, we are expecting your child to do the following:
1.
Write a reflection summary on what they feel is
preventing them from attaining the 2.75 G.P.A. Parents are encouraged to work
with their child on this in addition to signing the paper and submitting it to
the PEOPLE Liaison.
2.
Meet with all their teachers, especially the ones where
they are not making a ÒCÓ or better to gain clarity on what they need to do to
improve their grades.
3.
Develop an action plan outlining the steps they will
commit to taking in order to move off of probation. This plan will be developed
between the student, PEOPLE Liaison and Tutoring Site Coordinator.
If at the end of the semester your child hasnÕt raised their
GPA to a 2.75 and/or hasnÕt taken the steps for improvement, then your
childÕs file will then be reviewed for program termination.
This process will go into effect immediately following the 2nd Semester grade report June, 2005. Your childÕs Liaison will review semester grade reports over the summer to determine if your child will be placed on probation. If so, you and your child will receive notification by the beginning of the PEOPLE Program academic year in September.
** Probation reviews will occur each semester**
The purpose of this is to NOT discourage your childÕs progress. No decision for enrollment in our program is made independently on their grades alone. However, it is important that your child do their part to be academically successful. They need to come to tutoring, seek additional help from their teachers, and communicate with their Liaisons. We realize that being on probation is an uncomfortable position. Rest assured that all of us in the Madison PEOPLE Program are eager to help your child regain a solid academic standing. When in doubt, you can always contact your Liaison at 262.7415.
We want all students to have the best experience possible
during the school year. To ensure this, there are some behavior guidelines we
expect students to follow while attending the program.
While attending the PEOPLE Program, you are expected to:
If you meet and/or exceed these expectations, your
consequences will be:
Failure to adhere to the above listed behavioral
expectations will result in one or more of the following consequences,
depending on the severity of the incident and other factors: verbal
warning, staff/student
conference, administratorÐ parentÐstudent conference, probation and/or dismissal from
the PEOPLE Program.
Fighting, endangering the life of staff or students, and
breaking the law while on campus are grounds for immediate dismissal. It is critical that we maintain a safe, healthy,
quiet, and respectful academic learning environment for all students. If you
have any questions or concerns, please contact your childÕs PEOPLE liaison.
Students enrolled in
the PEOPLE Program must fully participate on a yearÐround basis. Failure to maintain continual enrollment and active
participation in the program (excessive absences, failure to enroll or
nonÐparticipation in workshops and special events, etc.) can result in the
placement of your child on probation or the loss of your childÕs slot in the
PEOPLE Program. It is the parentÕs responsibility to ensure that your
childÕs PEOPLE Program records (name of school, home address, telephone
numbers, etc.) are updated whenever changes occur.
All students are required to attend sessions every day that they are scheduled throughout the duration of the program. It is very important that you notify us if your child will be absent during any day of the program. If advance notice is not possible, please call 262Ð7415 as early as possible on the day your child will be absent or send a note with your child upon his/her return. This level of communication is crucial, as we would like to provide advanced notification to the tutor so that staff will not be waiting for students who will not be attending. Moreover, parental notification also helps us and you to ensure that your child is where you expect them to be.
PEOPLE Program educational facilities and surrounding
areas are restricted to
registered students ONLY. Although parents and other significant adults
(grandparents, aunts and uncles, foster parents, mentors, teachers, guidance
counselors, etc.) are welcome to visit, the friends and young
relatives of our students will
not be allowed on campus. However, friends
and young relatives are certainly welcome to attend major family events and
activities Ð if escorted and supervised by an adult family member.
If there is an emergency while your child is on campus, you will be contacted immediately. If a parent cannot be reached, we will call the emergency contact number listed on your childÕs application form. Please note that cell phones are onÐsite at all times, if you need to reach your child for emergency purposes. These numbers are listed in the handbook and will be listed in the PEOPLE Telephone Directory.
If your child requires medication for emergencyÐprone health problems (asthma, etc.), please insure that your child keeps that medication in their backpacks and knows how to selfÐadminister. PEOPLE staff are not allowed to administer medication to students Ð including aspirins. The only exception to this rule is if CPR is needed and a CPR certified staff member is on duty. First aid kits are readily available for minor injuries, such as cuts and sprains. However, aspirin and other forms of medication can not be given to students.
Homework and Course books:
If your student has homework or
requires assistance, please have them bring these materials to campus when they
attend their tutorial and homework sessions. Students will not be allowed in
the tutorial and homework rooms if they do not have these materials with them. We also recommend that students bring their daily
planner, which contains all of their assignments, so that we can help them with
organizational skills.
Supplies: Every student will be given pencils, pens, notebooks
and, if necessary, books and computer disks.
Video games, walkman/discman, and sports items (balls, skateboards, scooters, etc.): Please leave these items at home so they are not lost or stolen. They will not be needed on campus.
Items that are left on site
or in our transportation vans are removed and stored in our main office. If
your child has lost any items and believes that they may have been left on site
or in one of our vans, please contact our office to claim and retrieve the
items. At the present time, we have several items (backpacks, clothing, keys,
etc.) in our lost and found box.
