TEACHERS

Dean Walter Lane talks with Janet McCollum, an English teacher from Harold Vincent High School in Milwaukee. McCullum had just finished addressing 90 Milwaukee PEOPLE program high school seniors and their proud families at the University Club on March 6, 2006.

"I witness the daily struggles some students have with writing. But within each of us the gift of words lies dormant waiting to be found...like a pirate treasure."

— Janet M. McCollum, English teacher from Milwaukee and PEOPLE summer writing workshop instructor.

An estimated 80 students will begin college life as UW-Madison freshmen in fall of 2007, bringing the total number of PEOPLE undergraduates up to 189.

Every student has grown individually and as an author; and I feel privileged to have worked with such an extraordinary group of young people. I will remain forever touched by the words they chose to share.
—Laura Busse, MPS teacher, 10th grade writing workshop, Summer 2005

PEOPLE seeks a broad impact through professional development of teachers from participating school districts.

Dozens of teachers are recruited to teach summer classes to PEOPLE high school students in writing, science and math. Classes take place in the morning, Monday through Friday. Teachers receive free room and board on the UW-Madison campus, attend credited professional development seminars and experiment with culturally relevant models of teaching and learning.

Three-credit seminars are taught by UW-Madison faculty to enhance curricular and pedagogical skills. Tuition and books are provided by the PEOPLE program. Past seminars have discussed issues in science, math and literacy, as well as examined strategies for teaching in urban settings.

For more information about teaching opportunities with the summer PEOPLE program, call 608-262-7415 and ask for the summer school coordinator.
